Sticky Board

Middlespot

Middlespot is a wonderful new (beta) search engine that is a cross between (insert any search engine) and Wall Wisheror Edistorm. So, what does that mean? It means that a person has a virtual sticky note/wall that they can customize all they want. By clicking on the magnify glass user gets their search results in thumbnails that they can stick to their "wall" or trash.

I find this to be a rather innovative search tool and creates a unique browsing experience to each user.

I highly recommend checking out Middle Spot by clickinghere!!!

Lino It - Collaborative, Multimedia Sticky Notes

Lino It is a free service that allows you to create a canvas of online multimedia sticky notes. In addition to basic text, the sticky notes you place on your canvas can contain videos, images, and file attachments. Unlike some similar sticky note services, Lino Itallows you to alter the size and color of your fonts. You can use Lino It's built-in calendar tool to set due dates on your sticky notes.

To use Lino It, you have to register for an account. Once you've registered you can create as many sticky note canvases as you like. You can make your canvases and notes public or private. If you choose to make a canvas public other users can add sticky notes to it and read all of the notes on it.

Applications for EducationLino It is very similar to Wall Wisher which I've used a few times this year for brainstorming sessions and to create collages of student-contributed information. Those same things and more could be done with Lino It. Students could use Lino It to brainstorm on collaborative projects then outline tasks necessary to complete those projects. The tasks can be assigned due dates on each sticky note. Attaching files to Lino It stickies allows you and your students to post PDFs or other documents that may not be available online.

5 Fantastic Ways to Use Wallwisher in the Classroom

With everyone going back to school slowly but surely, I’ve been playing with and researching some fun tools to use in the classroom. I’ve known aboutWallwisher since FETC 2010 but really didn’t give it much more than a glance or two until now. I have to say, I’m kind of lovin’ it!
So, what is Wallwisher?
Well, Wallwisher is “an online notice board maker.” Kind of a bleak description so to spice it up a little,Wallwisher is an online collaboration tool to share ideas, resources, and thoughts on a particular topic. Ahhh yes, much better…and pretty cool, huh?

Glogster Video Tutorial

Glogster is a great tool that students can use to create multimedia collages. I've written about Glogster on a number of occasions in the past (examples herehere, and here). One of Glogster's strongest supporters is Traci Blazosky who created an excellent video tutorial that walks teachers through the process of using Glogster. Watch the video below.

Applications for Education
Glogster is a great tool for having students create collages of information they've found and or created. Students can combine videos, images, text, and audio into one online display that can stand alone or be embedded into a blog, website, or wiki. This fall some of my Civics students will be creating Glogster "glogs" about the candidates running for political office this fall.

The name Edistorm is a mash-up of the name Thomas Edison and brainstorm, it is inspired by Edison’s idea factories. Edistorm is an incredible brainstorming and collaboration tool that, on the surface, reminds me of Wallwisher. Edistorm has some additional features and abilities that make it very useful in the classroom. Just like Wallwisher, you brainstorm and collaborate using virtual sticky notes. Edistorm gives you a place to organize ideas in a real-time interactive wall. Virtual sticky notes can teach have their own color and can be organized in vertical or horizontal groupings. Edistorms can be created independently or with others in a collaborative effort. Edistorm features an idea bot that works at the bottom of the screen offering suggested ideas based on what students add to the sticky notes in the work space. There are a variety of bots including a rhyming bot, thesaurus, and related words. Public and solo Edistorms are free to create, premium accounts are available for private Edistorms. http://www.ilearntechnology.com/

Stixy

http://www.stixy.com/
Stixy is a site for creating online content and collaboration in the same vein as Wall Wisher or Spaaze. Think of the page as one giant sticky note that you can edit and add all types of media.

http://www.spaaze.com/ is easy to use. A person has the ability to move anything around, create hot spots, and best of all has a very nice over view button to see a preview version of your board.  This is a site that is similar to Pindax or Wall Wisher where you customize a "sticky" board.

To get started with Wallwisher

Click on “login/register” (top right hand corner) and sign up for a Wallwisher account. You can also sign in with your Google account or your OpenID identity if you have one. You don’t have to sign up for a Wallwisher account if you would prefer not to, but you will have to provide your email address to access the wall you create if you want to visit it again.

Click on “build a new walll. Here you will be prompted to write your title and subtitle. You can also choose your colour scheme and select your privacy options (who can post sticky notes on your wall, whether you want to approve notes before they’re published and who can see your wall). These privacy options are great as you can cater for the different Internet guidelines that different schools use.

Now you have your wall you just double click anywhere on the wall to create a sticky note (you can write up to 160 characters). At the bottom of your sticky note you can add a link to audio, images or videos by putting in the web address.

When your wall is complete you can click on “do more” up the top on the right to chose to embed the wall on your website or blog, email it, save it to your favourites or post it to bookmarking sites.

USES IN THE CLASSROOM
Reflect on what the students had learned after a unit of work on dinosaurs. While you don’t need an account to post a sticky note, the students just posted their sticky notes under the teacher's login on the IWB. They included links to videos and websites that had been previously used in class.
